Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
